| | Press Release THE WESSEX WYVERN FORGES CLOSER TIES WITH POOLE
Tom Penney's workshop in West Quay Road, Poole can be a bit like Vulcan's furnace as raw bits of metal are moulded, hammered and honed into shape. His latest creation is a three dimensional wyvern - commissioned by Wyvern Cargo Ltd of Poole to mark their thirtieth anniversary year. The mythical Wyvern has been synonymous with Wessex since the days of Alfred the Great.
Tom spent a lot of time researching the anatomy of wyverns before embarking on his latest project. "Nobody I've spoken to has ever seen a wyvern - yet everyone seemed to know what they looked like" he explains. "Historical reference shows that the front half is a dragon, with wings like a pterodactyl, while the back half is a serpent. Such an odd combination demands an aerodynamic shape or you could never imagine it taking to the skies."
Tom originally started metalcraft sculpture as a hobby but it's now his career and his work is widely acclaimed. He regularly receives artistic commissions both at home and abroad, with his most distant creation residing in the Falkland Islands.
